Why your chronic symptoms keep coming back

When the same fatigue, anxiety or pain returns no matter what you do, the problem is rarely the symptom. It is the terrain underneath it — and terrain has to be rebuilt, not suppressed.

02.1The difference between a symptom and a cause

For years I treated symptoms. A headache meant rest and water. Fatigue meant coffee and an earlier night. Anxiety meant breathing exercises. Each worked for a few hours, and then the same thing returned, because nothing I did touched the layer underneath.

Chronic symptoms are stubborn precisely because they are the visible end of an invisible chain. By the time you feel tired, anxious or in pain, the system that produces those feelings has been shifting for months or years. Suppressing the output does not change the input.

02.2The mineral terrain

Minerals are the body's spark plugs. Every enzyme, every nerve signal, every hormone depends on them. When key minerals run low — and they do, slowly, under years of stress, poor sleep, refined food and environmental load — the systems they support begin to misfire. Adrenals slow. Thyroid pattern shifts. Blood sugar gets ragged. Sleep fragments. Mood frays.

These are not separate problems. They are different dials on the same dashboard, all reading low because the same underlying supply is depleted. This is why chronic issues so often arrive in clusters: the tired person is also the anxious person is also the person who cannot sleep.

02.3Why willpower is not the missing ingredient

One of the cruellest things about chronic illness is the implication that you could fix it if you tried harder — slept more discipline, ate more discipline, meditated more discipline. But you cannot willpower your way past a magnesium level that has been low for a decade. The chemistry has to come first.

When I finally saw my own hair test, the relief was physical. There it was, in numbers: the reason rest had stopped working. I had not been lazy or weak. I had been running an engine with no oil, and asking it to perform.

02.4Rebuilding, not relieving

This is the shift that changed everything for me. The goal stopped being "make the symptom stop" and became "rebuild the terrain so the symptom has nothing to feed on." That takes longer. It is less dramatic. But it is the only approach I have found that actually holds.

The protocol I followed with Susan Cachay was built on exactly this idea: give the body the minerals it is missing, in the right balance, remove what is blocking them, and let the system re-regulate itself over months. The symptoms did not get suppressed. They got outgrown.
